Can I work on a Student Visa? (NZ)

New Zealand student visa holder entitlements

Updated over a week ago

If you are a New Zealand Student Visa holder, you may be eligible to work with Sidekicker.

A student visa allows you to work up to 20 hours per week during your course if you are studying full-time. You can confirm your work rights in your eVisa, or the visa label in your passport. You might also receive this information in a letter from New Zealand Immigration.

As a Sidekick, it is your responsibility to ensure you are monitoring your hours, and that you do not exceed your working restrictions. If you are hired on a shift that may push you over your 20-hour limit for the week, you will need to withdraw via the Sidekicker app. You will also need to withdraw any applications you still have pending on jobs that could push you over this limit.

What if I have an exemption?

Some Sidekicks that hold a student visa may be exempt from the 20-hour restriction. You must provide supporting documentation in advance to [email protected] if any of the following applies to you:

  • You are on student holidays or have completed your course - please send us an official letter from your university that confirms your enrolment, your name, your course, and the start and end dates of your holiday, or the course completion date.

  • You are a current Masters by Research/Doctorate student - please send us an official letter from your university that confirms your enrolment, your name, and your course.

NOTE: You may also work without restriction over the Christmas and New Year holidays.

It is your responsibility to ensure you are monitoring your hours, and that you do not exceed your working restrictions as per your visa conditions.

For more information about working while on a Student Visa, be sure to visit the New Zealand Government website. Whilst we cannot provide assistance on specific visa matters, please do not hesitate to reach out via the blue chat bubble on the Sidekicker app if you think there is something we can help with.
